Samsung Nixes Knox: The Android Security Saga Continues

After 18 months of going it alone and spending untold sums of money on development and marketing, Samsung is throwing in the towel on Knox.  Google is stepping up to take the lead on Android security.
The move by Samsung is not surprising, considering Samsung’s 24% drop in operating profit and 10% drop in sales for the three months ended June 30th. And despite a lot of hype, Knox market take rate is a miserable at <2%. Ironically, this comes just a few weeks after the U.S. Department of Defense approved the use of Knox
So why did Sundar Pichai, Google’s head of Android development, talk up Knox during his remarks at Google I/O. as if there is some new found co-development love between Samsung and Google –and that this collaboration is centered on Knox? Probably because Samsung is Google’s largest Android partner, and Google wants to help Samsung save face. Plus, it makes sense that Google will use whatever Marcom benefit Knox may have. Frankly, if I were in Pichai shoes, I’d do the same; I’d want to put the best spin on what clearly is a precarious situation.
What’s Google up to? As I understand it, Google has built its own organic container. It’s Samsung Knox-like. But it’s not Knox. It’s new. It’s not yet field-tested. Further, the initial specs of Google Android L specifications appear very anemic. In the release I’m expecting this fall, there appears to be no on demand VPN capability –and no per app VPN. To me, that means the “secure” container will hold apps and data safe and separate at rest, but not while in transit where consumer and biz apps will flow across the same secure connection into the enterprise. It also remains unclear how Google will integrate features and or product from its recent acquisition of Divide.
The idea of an organic security solution built in the Android OS is a good one. And I think Pichai is sharp and gets the enterprise space. (Many Google partners tell me he is very engaged and accessible.) Even so, it appears the road ahead will be long for Google. Why? Because the scene seems eerily similar to many of the false promises, the Android ecosystem has made to enterprise interests.
We await answers in at least two important areas:
Backwards compatibility is a known, unknown. Google says that Android L will support handsets with the Ice Cream release of Android and newer. The problem, of course, is that Android was built by a search company, for advertisers, and then distributed by telcos. All eyes are on Pichai to see how he navigates the various enterprise interests – internal and external – to fulfill his commitments to business users.
Distribution is complex and political. Don’t forget: OS versions of Android like Ice Cream and Kit Kat may be created equal, but they are not alike. Let’s image Google releases a generic and (to its credit) clean-build to the handset makers. Then, the handset makers have to butcher the generic release to meet each requirement by each telco, and by each handset model. As an example, I think Samsung maintains about 150 current images of each version of Android. That mess is what causes division and delays in the user base. Fragmentation and badly or staged synchronization of OS release is an unacceptable artifact in the enterprise market.
Granted, Google has been updating handset issues at a quicker pace – particularly when it comes to security patches, via Play Services –and so far, the telcos have not played spoilers. But remember: Google has not initiated a move to push an entirely new OS directly to users except to those who own Google’s telco independent Nexus brand devices. Keep in mind that there’s a big difference between updating a feature or security patch and producing an entirely new OS. OS updates typically up the Kernel and the radios. It will be interesting (and historical) if the telcos continue to stay out of the way.
That’s why I’ll be watching Pichai, Androids’ captain, to see how well he navigates these choppy waters. Whatever else, satisfying enterprise users is going to take time, and in the end it appears that Google still will not be able to offer an end-to-end security solution required by so many enterprise sectors and probably IoT. Perhaps I need to pinch myself, but is a natural synergy between BlackBerry and Google appearing on the horizon?”
This fall Google looks to be hosting a major event around the release of Android L that appears to include partners like Airwatch, Citrix, Good Technology, MobileIron and SAP .

Android L confirmed for Moto X and Moto G

Android L confirmed for Moto X and Moto G
That will take time though as Android L is still only available for developer preview. Motorola is rolling out the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update for all its phones right now.

Yesterday we reported that all Motorola phones in the country would be getting the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update. The company is reportedly also going to bring the Android L update to its Moto X and Moto G smartphones. While the Moto X is the company’s flagship product, Moto G was the first Motorola phone launched in the country.

The information was first published by Android Origin, which got screenshots of conversations with the company’s customer care. The customer care representative though mentioned that information about the Moto E wasn’t available at the moment. “For the Moto E, we do not have any information as of today,” said the executive.

Google though has unveiled only the developer preview of Android L till now. This means that there may still be changes and the information may turn out to be incorrect. Motorola though has often promised an update to the ‘next major Android version’ for its smartphones.

Android Wear Bug Is Preventing Users From Installing Paid Apps

It's only been a few days since the first Android Wear apps hit Google Play, but some users have
already encountered a major bug preventing them from downloading paid apps.

The problem, first reported by Android Police, seems to be caused by Google's app encryption.

The way Android Wear apps are downloaded is handled differently from other Android smartphone and tablet apps. Since an Android Wear app sends notifications via its smartphone-app counterpart, watch apps are automatically downloaded to your smartwatch if you have the existing smartphone app from Google Play.

If you download Runtastic's Android app from Google Play, for example, its Android Wear counterpart will automatically download. At least it should. Where users are encountering issues is when they try to download a paid Android Wear app.

In order to block pirating, Google encrypts paid apps in a way that ties them to specific devices. This encryption apparently prevents Android Wear from recognizing the apps. As Android Police explained: "It seems the Android Wear install process runs into a road block with paid apps because it doesn't know how to extract the file of the encrypted apk. Since the installer fails to recognize the payload, it assumes there is nothing to install and silently aborts."

While most Android Wear apps currently available are free, this is obviously a problem for Google, as well as developers and users. The company will likely come up with a fix in the near future, but until then, it's best to avoid paid Android Wear apps.

Google has not yet commented on the issue or revealed whether a fix is in the works. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Android-powered Lumia smartphone in the works: Report

It seems that you may see a few more Android smartphones by Microsoft in coming time. The company is reportedly expanding its Windows Phone-powered Lumia line to include an Android smartphone.

Twitter user EVLeaks, which has a good track record of leaking information about gadgets, has said that Android-powered Lumia smartphones are currently being developed under the 'Nokia by Microsoft' brand. No further details have been provided yet.

Nokia unveiled its first Android-powered smartphones under the Nokia X brand earlier this year. The trio of low-end smartphones, named Nokia X, X+ and XL, was positioned a "feeder" system for Nokia's Lumia phones and replaced Google's services with Microsoft's.

In June this year, Microsoft (after finalizing the acquisition of Nokia) released Nokia X2, which brought a few software improvements on the table. The new software was not released for Nokia X, X+ and XL.

Despite introducing Android to its ranks, Nokia and then Microsoft kept its Lumia series for Windows Phone only till now. The latest Windows Phone update, 8.1, has bridged the gap between Microsoft's mobile OS and Android to quite an extent.

EVLeaks has also said that Microsoft Surface Mini, the smaller version of Surface tablet, is back in production. Though there were several rumours of Microsoft readying Surface Mini for launch in May this year, the company unveiled Surface Pro 3. Now, according to the tweet below, the tablet will be launched next summer.

It is said that Microsoft Surface Mini will be the best note-taking tablet and have a 7.5-inch screen with 1440x1080p resolution. The tablet will run on Windows 8.1 OS instead of Windows RT and is expected to be powered by an ARM chip. This device may feature 3G and 4G connectivity, which current Surface models do not have.

The users of the three smartphone models will receive notifications to update their Operating System. They can also get the updates manually by scrolling through the settings menu.

Apple hires TAG Heuer sales director. Tick tock tick iWatch?

Apple has hired the sales director of the TAG Heuer luxury watch company to assist with the company's upcoming launch of the iWatch.
Apple employed an executive from the LVMH brand of watches, which includes TAG Heuer, Zenith and Hublot, as the company will be looking to label the iWatch as "Swiss made," LVMH head Jean-Claude Biver told CNBC.
Biver added that he was happy for the former sales director, believing that his new role in Apple will be a great opportunity for him.
"If it had been a direct competitor, I would have felt a bit betrayed, but if he goes to Apple I think it is a great experience for him," said Biver.
Apple has been trying to lure top executives away from working at high-end Swiss watch makers, but with not much success. The company is looking for Swiss watch experts because the "Swiss made" label is synonymous with top-quality watches, according to Bernstein senior luxury items analyst Mario Ortelli.
"For sure they are trying to approach the Swiss manufacturers, but the Swiss have got no great interest in working with Apple - if you are a luxury producer and you cooperate with Apple, you have got a dilution," Ortelli said to CNBC.
Ortelli added that the Swiss watchmakers are moving away from creating devices such as Apple's because their products, which are designed in the U.S. state of California and manufactured in the Asian country of China, will negatively affect the "Swiss made" tag.
Ortelli also said that while Apple's iWatch, and other upcoming smartwatches, will be a threat to the low-end models of Swiss watches, the release of these devices into the market will actually be an advantage for high-end watch makers as young watch consumers are created who would eventually look for other watch brands after Apple.
It was first reported in March that Apple was trying to reach out to Swiss watch companies to forge partnerships, with Apple also contacting individuals to take their expertise into the company to work on the iWatch. Biver confirmed the reports, saying that Apple tried to hire away LVMH employees but failed in doing so.
The dominant belief among watch makers is that smartwatches have little potential, which is why most are skeptical on forging partnerships with Apple. Nick Hayek, chief executive of Swatch, pointed to technical constraints as one of the factors that could spell failure for the upcoming devices.
"To make a smartwatch work you need two hands or voice recognition, which again needs a lot of power, which is difficult in a very limited space," said Hayek.
The iWatch is rumored to have a launch date some time later this year in the fourth quarter.
